Dental restorations or ‘fillings’ are placed in a tooth to stop the progression of dental decay.

If left untreated, decay can spread to the nerve and cause a severe toothache.

Decay in teeth is caused by sugar, which combines with bacteria in the mouth on a tooth surface. Bacteria in your mouth convert sugar into acid. The acid dissolves the tooth from the outside and works its way deeper into the tooth.

During your appointment, we will administer local anaesthetic to numb the tooth in question, we will then clean the decayed and infected part of the tooth using a small drill. Once there is only healthy tooth remaining, we will fill the cavity to restore it to its original shape and function.

FAQs

What type of fillings do you use?

At Londent, we only use tooth-coloured white filling materials that will blend seamlessly with your teeth.

The filling material we use is called composite. Composite is a resin-based material which uses a form of adhesive dentistry where the material bonds to your tooth, allowing us to rebuild the tooth structure which is missing after the removal of decay. Traditional silver fillings require a much larger cavity to be cut as the material does not bond to the tooth so has to be locked in an undercut. Adhesive dentistry ensures we can be as minimally invasive as possible at while removing the decay and preparing the cavity for the filling. Composite comes in a range of shades so are matched precisely to your tooth prior to placement to ensure the best aesthetic results possible.

How long do they last?

The life expectancy of white fillings is dependent on a multitude of factors such as your risk of decay, quality of oral hygiene, difficulty in initial placement and how heavy your bite may be. We advise regular check-ups and routine x-rays to assess restorations for failures, so they can be managed correctly and quickly.

Do you change silver fillings for white ones?

Silver amalgam fillings can appear obvious in your mouth particularly when smiling or laughing. After a thorough assessment, we are able to replace old silver amalgam fillings with tooth-coloured white fillings if you are unhappy with the appearance of your old fillings. On occasion, we may discourage this, for example, if the amalgam restorations are very large, deep, and close to the nerve. Sometimes intervention, in this case, can lead to sensitivity in an otherwise stable tooth, as a replacement can require cutting some healthy teeth away. Restorations such as these may benefit from tooth-coloured crowns rather than a replacement or be left alone until the filling fails.

How much do white fillings cost?

The cost for tooth-coloured fillings is dependent on size and position in your mouth as this will impact placement and time required for your appointment. We will ensure a clear treatment plan is provided prior to undergoing any care so you are aware of all costs involved.

I enquired about a chipped tooth issue and was seen within 24 hours of making the enquiry. Treatment options were clearly explained and discussed, in what is a very professional setting just off Shad Thames. I appreciate the fact that costs were also discussed before making the appointment, which meant that there were no surprises on the day. Overall, very...

After years of not going to the dentist, I was dreading my visit. Very welcoming practice. Dr Li kept me informed of my treatment plan and explained clearly what was needed and why. Very reassuring and professional. I've never had to wait for my appointments as well, which is very appreciated on a tight schedule.

I visited Londent and had an initial consultation with Dr Panayiotis Kaimakamis (Periodontist). What an absolute dream he was from start to finish. I was quite anxious regarding some rather complex periodontal surgery I needed ASAP and his customer care, subject matter expertise and surgical skills in my humble opinion remain unmatched. I recommend both this clinic and Dr Pano...
